While you can find great hostels on Java, Bali and Lombok - Hostels and super-budget guest houses in Sumatra are often very basic. Permata In offers you a kind of hotel-comfort for the price of a guest house, good location close to the center and main malls and fast & reliable WiFi in the room. The budget single room cost just 6€ when searching for it with Trivago. It as no air-condition, but its clean and comfy.
Even if Booking.com, agoda and other sources say breakfst would be no included they basicly give everyone a breakfast voucher. And most important: The shared shower and toilet are seperated and they do offer toilet-paper and a sink. You might wonder while i write this: Here in Medan this is already Luxury and the two other acomadations did not offered this. If you are willing to spend arround 9-11€ you can even get a really good double-budget room with aircondition wich was really comfy. Deluxe rooms - so including hot water, aircondition and toiletrys start from arround 14€ to 19€ - per room. So good for your if you travel with your partner because cost per person is in the range of super-budget but you get european standarts. The breakfast was a soup wih rice - so the indonesian version. But it was good and not to spicy. And hey - you are in Indonesia so try there local dishes. Merdeka walk is just a 15 minutes walk, Sun Plaza Mall with great food-court just a 20 minute walk. Or just let the reception get you a grab. (The cheap asian version of Uber). See the hotel
